Donkey, Farmer, and the Shadow Knight

Once upon a time, in the sunlit valley of Willowbrook, there lived a kind-hearted farmer named Emrys. Emrys was tall and sturdy, with twinkling brown eyes and a gentle smile that made even the grumpiest hens cluck with delight. Though his farm was not the grandest in the kingdom, it was certainly the happiest, thanks to his loyal companion, a donkey named Mossy. Mossy was, by all accounts, an exceptionally clever donkey. With grey, shaggy hair, wise eyes, and a nose that could sniff out trouble from a mile away, Mossy was no ordinary beast of burden. He had saved Emrys from many a mishap—once leading him away from a hornets’ nest, another time pulling him from a muddy pond. Yet, perhaps Mossy’s greatest talent was his ability to listen, for he never brayed over Emrys’ stories, and always offered a nudge or a nuzzle at just the right moment.

Life in Willowbrook was peaceful, and the farm thrived with laughter and the sweet scent of wildflowers. But one evening, as the sun dipped low behind the willow trees, casting long shadows across the fields, a chill swept through the valley. The animals grew restless and the wind carried whispers of a dark presence. At the edge of the farm, a figure mounted on a black stallion watched from behind a tangle of brambles.

The next morning, Emrys awoke to find a strange note pinned to his barn door. The parchment was black, the ink red as blood. It read:

"To the farmer of Willowbrook: I have heard of your marvelous donkey and desire him for my own. Surrender him before the next full moon, or suffer the shadow’s wrath. – Sir Caldus, Knight of the Night."

News of Sir Caldus’ demand spread quickly. Some villagers urged Emrys to give up Mossy, fearing the knight’s curse. Others promised to help defend the farm. But Emrys knew that brute force would not outwit the cunning knight. Instead, he spent sleepless nights with Mossy, devising plans as they walked the moonlit fields.

As the full moon approached, strange things began to happen. A chill hung in the air, crops wilted overnight, and the shadows seemed to whisper secrets. Emrys and Mossy stood their ground, refusing to be frightened away. On the night of the full moon, a dense fog rolled across the valley. From its depths emerged Sir Caldus, astride his black stallion, shadowy hounds at his side.

Emrys stood firm, Mossy at his side. “Mossy is not for sale or trade. He is my companion, not a prize.”

Sir Caldus sneered. “Perhaps you’ll change your mind if I take something else instead.” With a wave of his armored hand, the shadow hounds leapt forward, gnashing their teeth. But Mossy, faster than any ordinary donkey, darted between them, kicking up dust and braying so loudly the hounds tripped over their own ears. The villagers, hearing the commotion, raced to the farm, wielding lanterns and pitchforks, but the shadow hounds howled and scattered them with supernatural fear.

Furious, Sir Caldus dismounted, drawing his obsidian sword. “No more games. Surrender, or watch your farm wither to dust!” he roared. With another gesture, dark clouds swirled over the land, and a cold wind flung sharp flakes of ice into the crops. The flowers drooped, and the wheat bent low.

Emrys looked at Mossy, fear in his heart. But Mossy, clever as ever, remembered the one thing Sir Caldus could not stand—laughter. Legend told that the Shadow Knight’s power faded where joy and laughter reigned. Mossy began to bray, not a frightened bray, but a ridiculous, rolling laugh of a bray. It was so loud and silly that even the frightened chickens poked their heads out to see.

Sir Caldus covered his ears, his armor rattling. “Stop! Stop that infernal noise!” he cried, but Mossy only brayed louder, and the villagers danced and sang, banishing the shadows with every joyful note.

The clouds parted, the ice melted, and the crops rose up green and gold once more. Furious and weakened, Sir Caldus stumbled back to his stallion, the laughter ringing in his ears. The hounds, freed from the sticky trap, whimpered and fled into the mist, tails between their legs.

In the days that followed, Willowbrook flourished like never before. The villagers celebrated Mossy, crowning him with wildflowers. Emrys built a new stable, roomy and warm, where Mossy napped contentedly, dreaming of adventures yet to come.

But the tale did not end here. For Mossy and Emrys soon discovered that the darkness lingered at the borders of their land. Each month, when the moon grew full, shadows crept near, testing the strength of their joy. So Emrys and Mossy traveled the valley, sharing their story and teaching the villagers the secret of the Shadow Knight’s weakness.

In time, Emrys and Mossy were invited to the royal palace, where the king and queen praised their cleverness and awarded Mossy the golden bell of courage. As the years passed, Mossy grew wise and grey, always ready with a bray to chase away the darkness, and Emrys’ farm never again knew fear.

And though the shadows still lingered beyond the hills, everyone knew that as long as there was laughter and friendship, no knight of darkness could ever conquer Willowbrook again.
